What is the 50/30/20 rule?
The 50/30/20 rule is a simple budgeting method that splits your take-home (after-tax) income into three parts: 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and debt. It's popular because it's easy to remember and doesn't need spreadsheets. A great first budget if you've never tracked your money before.
How to use this calculator
Type in your income and choose whether that figure is monthly or yearly. The calculator instantly shows your three targets. Take them as a starting point: if your rent alone is more than 50%, shift a little from wants until it balances. The goal isn't perfection, it's a plan you can actually follow.
The hard part: sticking to it
Knowing your targets is easy. The real challenge is keeping track day to day so you know whether you're on course. That's exactly what Quidly is for: a private budgeting app for iPhone where you log spending in a couple of taps and see where your money goes against your budget. No account, no bank login, and nothing ever leaves your phone.
Common questions
Is this calculator really free?
Yes. Completely free, no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser. The income figure you type is never sent anywhere or stored.
What counts as a "need" vs a "want"?
Needs are essentials you can't skip: rent, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments. Wants are the nice-to-haves: eating out, streaming, hobbies, holidays and upgrades.
What if my needs are more than 50%?
That's common with high rent. Use the split as a guide, not a rule: trim from wants first, and put whatever you can towards savings. Even 5–10% saved is a strong start.
How do I actually track it?
Quidly is a private iPhone app that lets you log spending in seconds and see it against your budget, with no account and no bank connection.
